Concerning Week 19 of development.

Development

After some irregular disruptions brought about by external events, happy to report that the development of King For a Week is back on track. Week 19 of development has been about the early conceptualization and implementation of the combat system.

Of course, the weapons, specs, skills and abilities have already been implemented previously. However, the player's character still is unable to actually attack something at this point in time.

First, the architecture for the combat system has been outlined: how combat encounters begin, what triggers them, the duration of the encounters, end conditions, linkup to other systems, etc...

Secondly, a more direct implementation of the actual player attacks is currently being implemented. This means the whole flow from the input of attacks (different types of inputs, chorded actions for different attacks, etc...), all the way to the animation and dealing of damage/application of various effects, is currently in development.

This is, of course, a rather important implementation. Some would argue this could be the most important part of this pre-alpha development phase, as the decisions made now will shape combat and thus, one of (if not the) most important way of experiencing the King for a Week universe.

The focal points of the combat system are smoothness, speed and immersion. The whole system will revolve around real-time, first-person combat where the player chooses how to approach various encounters (based on skills, items, specs, roleplaying choices, etc...). Looking forward to finalizing player attacks by the end of week 20 and having a small target dummy where all of the attacks may be tested.

Milestones

Architecture for the combat system as a whole has been established. Ditto for player attacks.

Concerns

Hopefully, the good practices used in this implementation will make the AI side of the combat very easy to implement. Otherwise, that could also take some more time than anticipated, as combat is a rather chronophagous code/art implementation.

No new media for this week.
